Da ich kein Berufsmusiker bin, brauche ich keine sogenannte "Kritische Ausgabe" - Fachleute wissen, was das ist. Hier ist die gesamte Partitur, der gesamte Text, alles zum Mitlesen beim Hören und zum Nachvollziehen beim Denken. Für den Nicht-Wissenschafter zu diesem Preis das Beste, was es am Markt gibt. - Rene Gromes.

Wagner's ring is a remarkable achievement. Among other things, it offers filmmakers, such as George Lucas, a model of how to create an epic drama involving multiple generations of characters, which nonetheless holds together on stage (or, for Lucas' purposes, on film). To my taste, some of the Ring's most memorable moments, both musically and dramatically, are found in Das Rheingold. Dover reprinted the B. Schott's Sohne edition from the late 19th century. Schott's was Wagner's original publisher, ergo, this edition was subject to approval by Wagner himself. It's a large book, and it might well be possible to conduct from it. The book is, as always with Dover, well crafted, easy to read, and printed on acid-free, fade-resistant paper. There are English translations of the frontismatter, but no German glossary of musical terms. In many of my recent Dover reviews, I have failed to mention that the score is reasonably priced. The reason I haven't is because with Dover, that simply goes without saying.

This book is a full score of the opera, printed in Hungary. The paper and paperback binding are good quality, and the book lies open easily. There is, however, no index of acts or scenes, and all the stage directions and dialogue are in German with no translation. The price of $7.98 is a bargain.

Beethoven's only Opera

The history of Fidelio's composition is one of the great comic Operas in the annals of music theatre. Beethoven wrote the opera's first version, Leonore. He liked it, but didn't like the overture. He wrote a second overture, didn't like it, then wrote a third. He liked the new overture, but decided he didn't like the opera. So he re-wrote the Opera and re-titled it Fidelio. After finishing the new score, he decided that, you guessed it, he hated the overture. After composing two full length operas and four 15-minute overtures, he finally had the piece he wanted to compose. With sweat pouring off his brow, he triumphantly exclaimed, "man, I ain't doing that again!" Dover reprinted an early Breitkopf & Hartel edition of Fidelio, using as it's resource B & H's gesamtlichtwerke (I believe that's "complete works"). Dover chose Fidelio, not Leonore, for the simple reason that Fidelio is the version most often performed today. Maybe the idea that Dover could've publish two versions simply underlines the assertion that Dover should begin publishing Complete Works of some of Western Classical music's great masters, such as Beethoven (sold separately, or in a set, of course). The scholarship in this B & H Fidelio is, of course, highly reliable, and the book itself is easy to read and nearly indestructable. The print is large enough that this score could be used on the podium.

This opera, is probably the best opera in the time of Beethoven. This opera is not very long, but her sister Leonore, is longer and much more beautiful, but Fidelio, is much more dramatic. The opera score here, is very good, no dialog, which is pretty hard because the recordings I have, are missing dialog, and I want to see the dialog itself. The opera score contains no table of contents, no instrumentation, and no notes. The opera score which i got, fell apart after two months I have used it, and the scoresmells a horrible smell. do not buy this score, it is cheap, but you get cheap.

Many composers--Mozart, Verdi, Durufle, Faure--have written settings of the requiem, the Roman Catholic mass for the dead, and the listener can find a score for every taste, from the bombastic to the reflective. In this 1865 composition, Johannes Brahms took a different tack. Instead of using the familiar texts of the Latin Mass, Brahms chose to write a German requiem with a decidedly evangelical tack. Using texts from the German translation of the Bible--beginning with a phrase from the Beatitudes and ending with the Revelation of St. John the Divine ("Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ?") Brahms created one of the most comforting works of its kind ever written. (There are few greater evocations of heavenly bliss than No. 4, the chorus sung in English as "How lovely is thy dwelling place.") You can see how he did it with this full orchestral score from Dover. Dover scores are short on bells and whistles--not to mention English translations--but if your primary interest is in the music and how it was put together, you will find this a valuable tool at a bargain price.

übersichtlich und trotzdem datailliert gestaltet

Diese Ausgabe der kompletten Besetzung ist meines Erachtens eine gelungene Edition.

Zu Beginn sind hilfreiche Informationen gegeben mit verschiedenen Notenbeispielen, und zwar auf Deutsch und Englisch, wie auch die gesamte Ausgabe 2-sprachig ist. Auch eine genaue Instrumentationsliste ist gegeben.
Zusätzlich ist von jedem Satz der Text mit Stellenangabe der Bibel gegeben.

Die Partitur selbst ist nicht zu klein. Es gibt Taktzahlen zu beginn jeder Akkolade und auch Buchstaben. Die musikalische Angaben sind detailliert aber nicht überladen.
Die einzelnen Systeme sind am Anfang mit der Instrumentenbezeichnung versehen. Nachher sind dann nur noch die Bläser, Schlagwerk und Harfe mit Abkürzungen versehen. Das macht Sinn, da der Chor und die Streicherbesetzung ziemlich unzweideutig und übersichtlich ist, z.B. wegen den Schlüsseln. Das ist bei der Menge der Bläser und transponierenden Instrumenten nicht der Fall. Finde ich daher klug nur die Blasinstrumente anzugeben. Ist auch wirklich ausreichend.

Insgesamt also eine Ausgabe die alles drin hat was nötig ist und trotzdem übersichtlich und fürs Auge angenehm ist.
